What is Sivananda Yoga?

Sivananada Yoga

Yoga is a science of life that originated in India thousands of years ago and is the world's oldest system for developing the body, mind and soul.
The ancient Yogis had a deep knowledge of how to understand and live in harmony with themselves and their environment.
Yoga primarily teaches us how to balance the body and mind.
The methods combines meditation and breathing exercises to bring us peace of mind and good health.
True health can be achieved by training the mind and body in a disciplined way.

The Five Points of Yoga

Swami Vishnudevananda, a teacher of this organization (see below), has summarized the yoga that was passed down in ancient India into five points that can be effectively learned, practiced, and grown in us who live in modern society.
These five points form the basic philosophy of Sivananda Yoga.

Proper Exercise (Asana)

Exercises to build a well-balanced body, not to build up muscles to show off
Increases the flexibility of joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, improves blood circulation, and improves the flexibility of the spine.
Strength keeps the body young.

Proper Breathing (Pranayama)

By controlling your breath you control your prana (vital energy).
It balances the body and mind by increasing energy, which is the driving force behind the body, mind and thoughts.

Proper Relaxation (Savasana)

When the body and mind are overworked, efficiency decreases. It is important to deeply relax not only the body, but also the mind and spirit.
Yogic relaxation, which focuses on relaxation, is a way to recharge and restore yourself from the core of your being.
It's the natural way.

Proper diet (vegetarian)

What we eat every day is what makes us who we are.
Eating foods that are full of vitality will help you build such a body and mind.
It is very important to use water and sunlight in the best possible way.

Positive Thinking and Meditation (Vedanta and Dhyana)

Positive thinking and meditation will help you to control yourself. Your intellect and thoughts will be purified and you will be able to control the lower mind
The instinctive part is controlled by a stable focused mind and the conscious mind.

The Four Yoga Paths

There are four main paths in Yoga.
Bhakti Yoga (Yoga of Devotion)
Karma Yoga (Yoga of Service)
Raja Yoga (Yoga of Meditation)
Jnana Yoga (Yoga of Philosophy)

Swami Sivananda, the source of Sivananda Yoga knowledge and a well-known contemporary Indian saint, advocates holistic yoga.
Integral yoga teaches that by practicing all four paths in a balanced way, rather than just one, spiritual growth can be accelerated.

About Sivananda Yoga

The preventive and therapeutic benefits of Yoga are far-reaching and thanks to the pioneering work of many Yoga Masters, Yoga is widely spread around the world today.
Ambassador Swami Sivananda
Swami Sivananda, the great guru of Sivananda Yoga, was born into a devout Brahmin family and was a doctor and hospital director in Malaysia before taking up the path of yoga.
The Master realized that the problem of human suffering could not be solved by simply curing the physical illnesses of many people, so he became a monk in order to seek a solution, and he underwent rigorous training in Rishikesh, India, where he attained enlightenment.
1936年にディヴァイン・ライフ・ソサエティを創設しました。

スワミ・ヴィシュヌデヴァーナンダ師

In 1957, Swami Sivananda sent Swami Vishnudevananda to the West to spread ancient yoga throughout the world, with the words "People are waiting in the west," and he founded our organization, Sivananda Yoga International, in Canada.
